What does HCPC registered actually mean?

Updated: Nov 12, 2020

Upon qualification as a podiatrist you are required by law to register with the HCPC ( Health and Care Professionals Council). My registration Is CH32605. If you cannot find reference to your foot clinician it is highly likely that they are not qualified in podiatry, but may have attended short courses in foot health maintenance.

Most professions are registered within a professional body. Podiatrists are professional practitioners of Podiatry. In a previous post I mentioned that for most of the 20th Century we were known as Chiropodists and the profession was known as Chiropody.

My professional body is called the College Of Podiatry. Its name was changed in 2016/17 in an attempt to move towards the international name for Chiropody.

You may have seen examples of Chiropody / Podiatry / Foot Health Clinics stating that they are "State Registered". This again is a throwback to times past when many health professionals would use this term as recognition of being on the register of the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine ( CPSM), a body founded in 1961.

In 2001, The HCPC was created in recognition that many health professions had developed into specific areas of medicine and there was a need to modernise and simplify the registration under one overarching body.

For piece of mind any member of the public can research the status of a health professional by accessing the HCPC website at www.hcpc-uk.org and searching for the practitioners registration.

If in doubt, look for the logo displayed at the premises or on literature.

We display the HCPC registered logo and College Of Podiatry logo with pride on our website footer pages at devapodiatry.com, On facebook at facebook.com/devapodiatry .
